It is amazing how much rates vary even among towns in the same geographic area. I am surprised that there is any place that you can still get a high school girl to babysit for $3-$5 per hour. That seems to be the going rate now for just a mother's helper (11-13 year olds with no experience that care for children while one or both of the parents are at home). There are so many variables to consider when determining how much to pay the sitter. You've mentioned most of the "big ones." One more factor that would increase the hourly rate is if the parents have multiples under the age of two. Caring for one infant or toddler is a lot of work but caring for two or three at the same time can be overwhelming especially if the sitter doesn't have experience. Often sitters will get paid between $1 and $3 more per hour for twins or triplets.
Great blog, very informative.
